The purpose of this site is the preservation, enjoyment, and understanding of—and sharing the passion for—Crayford-converted Mercedes-Benz motor vehicles.
Crayford-Benzes include the station wagon (estate car / Kombi) conversions based on W108 / W109, W114 / W115, and W116 Mercedes saloons; chopped-top W123 convertible—the St Tropez; the unique Crayford Condor—a ‘sports wagon’ based on the W107 450SLC coupé; a sole landaulet version of a W116 350SEL (for the Emir of Kuwait), and a one-off W100 600 (‘Grand Mercedes’) that was converted from standard limousine to landaulet using M-B plans and specifications.
The most numerous conversions were the W114 / W115 wagons, of which more than 400 were sold. Then came the W116 wagons of which, to the site owner’s knowledge, approximately 15–20 were built. Next was the St Tropez convertible version of the W123 coupé (number not yet ascertained). There was only one example built of a W109 wagon (a 300SEL 3.5 that was destroyed in a fire). Of the Condor sports wagon there was only one (although, as it was seriously modified after a crash, photographic evidence could be misinterpreted to indicate the existence of two different Condors).
